Event Details




REGISTRATION: Advanced registration is strongly encouraged and available online. The deadline for advanced registration is 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 9. On-site registration will be available from 8:00 am to 8:30 am on the day of the tournament for an additional fee.


ELIGIBILITY: All students in Kindergarten through grade twelve (K-12) are eligible. Players may not compete in sections including grades higher than the highest grade in the school the player represents.


FORMAT: The tournament will be played in 4 ROUNDS and is divided into two sections, TEAM and INDIVIDUAL.

  • SECTIONS: TEAM—Each school may enter any number of FIVE-PLAYER teams. The best player on each team should be assigned to board one, the second best to board two, and so forth. Wins on Board 1 are worth 8 points, wins on Board 2 are worth 7 points, wins on Board 3 are worth 6 points, wins on Board 4 are worth 5 points, and wins on Board 5 are worth 4 points. The minimum number of players for a team is FOUR. Teams with only four players will earn 0 points for Board 5 each round. INDIVIDUAL—Players without a team will compete in the individual section combined across all grade levels (K-12).

  • TEAM DIVISIONS: High School (9-12), Ninth Grade and Under (K-9), Eighth Grade and Under (K-8), Sixth Grade and Under (K-6), Fifth Grade and Under (K-5), and Third Grade and Under (K-3). All divisions are combined for pairing purposes.

  • ROUND TIMES: 9:30, 12:00, 2:30, and 5:00. Final round will start earlier if possible.

  • TIME CONTROL: Game in 60m + 5s time delay


AWARDS: The awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 pm (or earlier if possible). No awards will be presented prior to the ceremony.

  • Two (2) team trophies will be awarded in the High School Team division. One (1) team trophy will be awarded in each of the other team divisions. School score is the sum of the best scores on each board.

  • Three (3) individual trophies will be awarded in the High School team division. Two (2) individual trophies will be awarded in each of the other team divisions.

  • One (1) trophy will be awarded to the top player in each grade in the individual section.


ENTRY FEE: The entry fee is $15.00 per player if pre-registered online. The entry fee is $20.00 per player if registering on-site. Players who begin registration after 9:00 am may not be paired in round one. Payment may be made through PayPal during online registration or by cash, check, or credit card on site.


MEMBERSHIP: United States Chess Federation membership is required for tournament participation. Players must either show proof of current membership or purchase at the tournament. Discounted rate (on-site only) is $9.00 while supplies last.


RATINGS: The current month United States Chess Federation rating supplement will be used for pairings. Players without a rating will be paired as unrated. (Local ratings no longer assigned.)


TIE BREAKERS: Ties will be broken using Modified Median, Solkoff, Cumulative, and Cumulative Opp. for individual trophies and using US Amateur Team Tiebreaks for team trophies.


EQUIPMENT: Players are responsible for providing sets, boards, and clocks. A limited number of clocks will be available for checkout. Chess equipment may be on sale during the tournament.


SPONSORS: Each school must have either a sponsor or parent present. There will be a sponsors and parents meeting approximately fifteen minutes after the start of round one.
