DATE – The tournament will be played on Saturday, January 7, 2006.
PLACE – The tournament will be played at Belleville East High School, 2555 West, Belleville, Illinois, 62221.
REGISTRATION – Tournament registration will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Advanced registration using the internet is recommended. Go to www.gatewaychess.org and click on the registration page, and follow the instructions. The deadline for registration is 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 6.
ELIGIBILITY – All students in kindergarten through grade twelve are eligible. Schools may not enter teams in sections that include grades higher than the highest grade in the school that the team represents.
HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION FORMAT – The tournament will be played in four rounds at 9:30, 12:00, 2:30 and 5:00. Students in grades nine through twelve are eligible. Each school may enter any number of eight player teams. All teams must have eight players, wins on board 1 are worth 12 points, wins on board 2 are worth 11points, wins on board 3 are worth 10 points, wins on board 4 are worth 9 points, wins on board 5 are worth 8 points, wins on board 6 are worth 7 points, wins on board 7 are worth 6 points and wins on board 8 are worth 5 points. The best player on each team is assigned to board one, the second best player to board two and so forth. Four school trophies and two individual trophies per board will be awarded. The time control is game in sixty minutes.
NINTH GRADE AND UNDER DIVISION FORMAT – The tournament will be played in six rounds at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30, 2:00, 3:30 and 5:00. Students in kindergarten through grade nine are eligible. INDIVIDUAL DIVISION FORMAT – The tournament will be played in six rounds at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30, 2:00, 3:30 and 5:00. Students in kindergarten through grade twelve are eligible. Trophies will be awarded to the top two players in grades ten through twelve, the top two players in grades seven through nine, the top two players in grades four through six and the top two primary players. The time control is game in thirty minutes.
RATINGS – United States Chess Federation Ratings will be used where possible. Grade twelve students without ratings will be assigned a rating of 800, grade eleven students without ratings will be assigned a rating of 750 and so forth.
AWARDS PRESENTATIONS – Awards will be presented for the NINTH GRADE AND UNDER DIVISION, the EIGHTH GRADE AND UNDER DIVISION, the SIXTH GRADE AND UNDER DIVISON and the FIFTH GRADE AND UNDER DIVISION AT 6:30. Awards will be presented for the HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION at 7:30. No awards will be presented before these times.
UNITED STATES CHESS FEDERATION – United States Chess Federation membership is required for tournament participation. Players must either show proof of membership or purchase membership at the tournament. The cost for players between fifteen years of age and nineteen years of age is $25.00 for one year membership and subscription of CHESS LIFE. The cost for players less than fifteen years of age is $19.00 for one year membership and subscription to CHESS LIFE, or $13.00 for one year membership and subscription to SCHOOL MATES.
ENTRY FEE – The entry fee is $8.00 per player. Checks must be written to INTERSCHOLASTIC CHESS.
TIE BREAKERS – Ties will be broken using the SOLKOFF SYSTEM, the SONNENBOERN-BERGER SYSTEM, the MEDIAN SYSTEM and the CUMULATIVE SYSTEM.
EQUIPMENT – Players are responsible for providing sets, boards and clocks and pen or pencil for writing game notation. Limited numbers of sets, boards and clocks will be available for those without necessary equipment. Sets, boards and clocks will be on sale at the tournament.
SPONSORS – Each school must have either a sponsor or parent present. There will be a sponsors and parents meeting during round one.
